from Kahului

This incredible Bars bedspread came from an eBay seller in Kahului, Hawaii. The edge-finished, single-layer patchwork quilt top is all cotton, with long strips of Hawaiian print fabrics. The maker is unknown, but it would appear the fabrics were cutaway scraps obtained from some kind of garment making. The strips are long, narrow, fairly uniform in size and shape, and include multiple colorways. It is quite large, 72" x 112" and was most likely made in the 1970s or later.

It arrived last week, too late to be included in the print catalogue, but I have an idea about how to display it in "Kalakoa, Discovering the Hawaiian Scrap Quilt", on display in January and February 2016 at Latimer Quilt & Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon. For anyone who can't get to Oregon, you can learn more about the Hawaiian quilts that don't appear in any of the history books by getting a copy of the print catalogue. 1. What a fun quilt that would be to sleep under! Too bad the maker left it as a top; but, knowing what it is like to quilt those beasts on a domestic, I'll just enjoy the color of this top!
